LORRAINE VENSKUNAS BRUEMMER

“If Tears Could Build a Stairway and Memories a Lane I'd Walk Right Up to Heaven and Bring You Home Again”

Lorraine Venskunas Bruemmer passed away Friday January 13, 2006. She was the loving, compassionate foundation of all we have done at the Venskunas Funeral Home, and her memory continues to act as a touchstone in the services we provide to the families who come to us.
A life long resident of New Britain she was the beloved wife of 33 years of Jay Porter Bruemmer. Lorraine was the daughter of the late Anthony G. Venskunas and Mary (Kritchum) Venskunas.
A remarkable woman of achievement, Lorraine was a graduate of Mt St Joseph Academy in West Hartford, and received a Bachelor of Science degree from Columbia University in New York. Furthering her education, Lorraine graduated from the St Francis School of Nursing as a Registered Nurse, and then graduated from the University of Hartford with a Master of Education degree.
Until Lorraine assumed the position as a fully-licensed funeral director for this firm on the passing of her father in 1962, she was a teacher of nursing at New Britain General Hospital and was also Head Supervisor of the hospital.  When she joined the staff of Venskunas Funeral Home, she became the 3rd generation of the family to serve our community in funeral service.
She was a remarkable woman who brought her many talents to a variety of business interests, government organizations, and professional associations:

  • Owner of Stanley Memorials
  • New Britain Board of Health commissioner for many years
  • Owned and operated Bruemmer-Venskunas Real Estate as a licensed real estate broker
  • Listed in The Marquis Who's Who of American Women publication for 1987/1988
  • A member of Connecticut Funeral Directors Association, National Funeral Directors Association, and the New Britain Funeral Directors Association
  • A member of The Shuttle Meadow Country Club in Kensington and St Andrews Church
  • Lorraine and her husband Jay was an Honorary Trustee of the New Britain Museum of American Art

Besides her husband Jay Porter Bruemmer, Lorraine is survived by her beloved daughter Linda L. Sovak, who has proudly assumed her mother’s role in the firm, and is the 4th generation of our family to enter the funeral service profession.  She also leaves her beloved grand-doggies Curtis, Amber, Chiquita and Chrissy and her grand-kitty Charlie.

Lorraine had a deep love of life and was actively working right up to the time of her death. She built the new funeral home facility in 1999 which was one of her ultimate goals. Lorraine and her husband Jay traveled extensively throughout their married life even though Lorraine would always say "There's no place like home."  Home, we assure you, will never be quite the same without her.
