LOUISE MATULIS
Louise (Shages) Matulis , 93, passed away on June 5, 2006 at home, surrounded by her family. She was predeceased by her husband John Matulis and her brothers John, William and Edward Shages. She was also predeceased by a daughter-in-law, Mary Ann Matulis. She leaves three sons, Atty. John Matulis Jr. and his wife Elaine of Berlin, James Matulis and his wife Lorraine Bakinow of Meriden, and Thomas Matulis of Bristol, CT. In addition, she is survived by eight grandchildren who loved her dearly: Brian of Boulder Creek, CA, Amy of New Britain, John III of Cambridge, MA, Gregory of Middleton, Austin and Taylor of Meriden and Todd and Jessica of Berlin, CT. A native of Hartford, she graduated from Bulkeley High School and was employed many years in the insurance industry, primarily for the Travelers Insurance Company in Hartford and later for the Fagan-Sawyer Agency in New Britain. She was active for many years in activities supporting her sons in their youth, including Scouting, baseball, church related activities, and various parent-teacher organizations. She was a long-time member of the Ladies Guild and the Mr. & Mrs. Club at St. Andrew's Church, the New Britain Senior Center, the Lithuanian Seniors, and the New Britain Counsel of Catholic Women. An accomplished tennis player in her youth, she and her late husband derived their greatest pleasures from supporting and watching their sons - and later their grandchildren - participate in a wide variety of activities. They were thrilled to be the parents or grandparents of 5 Eagle Scouts, numerous varsity-level athlete-scholars, and community service volunteers. In their retirement years they traveled extensively throughout the U.S. and Europe. Louise's family extends its sincerest appreciation to Danuta Dawidowska , caregiver and "best friend" for her help and support. Calling hours are 5 to 8:00 PM at the Venskunas Funeral Home 670 Stanley St., New Britain, CT on Thursday, June 8. Friends may pay their respects from 9:00am on Friday until the time of leaving for a Mass of Christian Burial at St Andrews Church at 10am. Burial will follow in the family plot in St Marys Cemetery.
